Holika Dahan 2024

We will celebrate Holika Dahan, also known as Chhoti Holi on 24th March 2024. During this ritual, a bonfire is lit to celebrate the burning of Holika, a demoness. Her death signifies the victory of good over evil. It also symbolises the triumph of righteousness over sin.

The bonfire is made using wood logs, straws, twigs, and dried leaves in a clean place. Before lighting the fire, devotees offer roli, flowers, peanuts and gur in the woods. Then they light the fire and circle it praying for their happiness and wellness. People also believe that it helps in environmental cleansing and disease prevention.

History of Holi and Its Significance

According to the Puranas, the story of the Holi festival foregoes Mahabharata and Ramayana. In Satyuga, one of the four eras as per Hindu cosmology, there was a demon, Hiranyakashipu. His son, Prahlad, was a wholehearted devotee of Lord Vishnu. Prahlad's devotion to Lord Vishnu angered Hiranyakashipu. He thought of killing his son in different ways, but he failed each time. The demon king tried killing Prahlad using his sister, Holika.

Hiranyakashipu had his son, Prahlad, sit with Holika in the fire knowing that she had a magical cloak. The cloak would make her impervious to the fire. But, when they sat in the fire, Lord Vishnu stepped in, sparing Prahlad, and burning Holika. The next morning when the villagers came to know about the demoness's death, they rejoiced. This is why celebrate this festival, to mark the triumph of good over evil.
