Significance and History of Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan holds great emotional and cultural significance in Indian culture. Different parts of India celebrate this Hindu festival to honor the love, care, and protection among siblings, reinforcing the bond they share. Today, people celebrating don't restrict the ritual to biological siblings; cousins, distant relatives, close friends, and family can also observe this auspicious tradition of tying a Rakhi.
The history of Raksha Bandhan dates back to various mythological stories of ancient India. According to a popular legend associated with the celebration is from Mahabharata. The tale is of Lord Krishna and the Pandavas’s wife, Draupadi, when Lord Krishna accidentally cut his finger with the Sudarshan Chakra, and Draupadi immediately tore a piece of her vastra, tying it on his bleeding finger to ease his pain as she couldn't bear seeing him hurt.
Seeing Draupadi's gesture of love and protection, Lord Krishna was deeply touched and promised to protect her from the world's evils. He called it the "Raksha Sutra." So, when Draupadi was humiliated by the Kauravas in their court, she prayed to Lord Krishna, and he kept his promise. He protected her by blessing her with an endless saree and ensured she was not publicly disrobed.
